The audio editor is written in C and C++, with the help of wxWidgets toolkit. The students started the project first in the fall of 1999 and released the first version (called version 0.8)on May 28, 2000. The earliest version of Audacity was made by two college-going students, namely Dominic Mazzoni and Roger Dannenberg at Carnegie Mellon University. It is available for Windows, Linux and other Unix-like, and macOS operating systems. Audacity is an open-source and free audio editor and recording software.
